Assembly Fund projects

Category A projects (£0-500)

 

A1 -  Tyrwhitt Road Neighbourhood Beautification Programme – Tyrwhitt Road Neighbourhood Watch

  • Bryan Pope (local resident) and Al Rivers (Pinnacle) gave the presentation about their project to fund hanging baskets for Tyrwhitt Road.
  • The Neighbourhood Watch want to cut down crime and improve the look of the area. The Jubilee Lunch they held earlier in the year was the spring board for this project.
  • Pinnacle will be supporting the project and their gardening team will be supporting the residents in implementing it.
  • No questions were received from the audience.

 

A2 - Christmas Theatre Trip for local families – Brockley Parents Forum

·        Sam from the Brockley Parents Forum introduced Janet Pearson from the Children’s Society to talk about the project.

·        She explained that they want toincrease facilities for children and bring the community together. 

·        They also want to increase awareness of Children's Centres and that the Children's Society is now running these and to promote the Parents Forum and get more people to join in. 

·        Janet said that a contribution of £1 from each family that go is being asked for and that one-third of the tickets would go to children in need.

 

·        The Chair opened the meeting up for questions.

 

·        Q1. Are the tickets for a family or individuals?

·        A1. For an individual - usually balance between adults and children but sometimes more of the latter

 

·        Q2. Where do children come from?

·        A2. They are all Brockley residents and come from all over the ward.

 

·        Q3. Why aren't all the tickets going to people in need?

·        A3. The Children’s Centre is a targetted early years service so lots of the tickets will go to families on low incomes.

 

·        Q4. Have you thought about taking just the children so can involve more?

·        A4. A parent/guardian have to be present to allow the project to go ahead, not enough staff resources. 

 

 

Category B projects (£501-1500)

 

B1 – Hatcham Village Big Lunch 2013 – New Cross Learning

·        The Chair opened the meeting up for questions.

 

·        Q1. Did you invite the bordering communities to come to your last big lunch?

·        A1. Yes they were invited - we had lots of good press coverage. Everyone that uses pub, church, school etc was invited.

 

B2 – Toys and play equipment – St John’s Baby and Toddler Group

·        Q1. Can I donate my old toys?

·        A1. Yes please!

 

B3 – Garden Ambassadors Course – Tanners Hill TRA

·        Gillian Lewis - one of the garden volunteers at the Heston Nature Garden – spoke about the project.

·        She explained the group had successfully submitted a bid to last year’s Assembly Fund to put on three events in the garden. These events brought lots of people together.

·        Gillian said they want to build on this success and conduct a project

·        Young people would be involved in various activities including designing a manual, garden badges, write a newsletter and lead tours. 

 

·        The Chair opened the meeting up for questions.

 

·        Q1. How many per course?

·        A1. Around 12 children - but it is quite flexible. Open to ages 8-12.

 

·        Q2. Can the children who take part in the scheme teach young people in future years?

·        A2. Aim is that if the group can run two one-day pilots can then utilise the skills developed for the young people who benefit to pass them on in the future.  

 

·        Q3. Is the programme aimed just at the Tanners Hill Estate?

·        A3. Yes, there are 300 properties on the estate.

 

·        Q4. Who will be the trainer and the assistant?

·        A4. Our gardening consultant who is a professional gardener.  She has also done a lot of unpaid voluntary work towards the project.

 

 

Category C projects (£1501-5000)

 

C1 - Threadz – Peabody

·        Q1. Why isn't Peabody funding it? Housing Associations get a lot of funding.

·        A1. We are funding lots of other projects but not this one which is why we're coming to Assembly.

 

·        Q2. London Borough of Lewisham do similar courses why can't you work with them?

·        A2. Will look into this.

 

·        Q3. Sounds a good project but it just aimed at the Leander Estate?

·        A3. No, open to whole ward.

 

·        Q4. Why are boys being excluded who might be interested?

·        A4. Youth activities normally dominated by boys and sometimes girls want a space of their own.  The initial idea for this project came from  conversations with young women. 

 

·        Q5. (From SNT) Tackling gang problems in girls often forgotten - big problem that gets ignored. 

·        A5. We agree.

 

·        Q6. What age range is the project for?

·        A6. 13-19

 

C2 – Educational experience – Somali Education Development Centre

·        Q1. Does your project only benefit Somalian children?

·        A1. People from different backgrounds as well - do promote inter-racial activities. Open to all.

 

·        Q2. How do you ensure the whole community knows about activities/courses so people from outside Somalian group?

·        A2. We advertise through the Council and give leaflets out in the street

 

·        Q3. Where are you based?

·        A3.  Deptford

 

C3 – Wickham Mews improvements – Wickham Mews Residents

·        Q1. Shouldn’t dealing with abandoned cars and other asb issues be the Police and Council’s job to tackle?

·        A1. It is an unadopted area and these problems are difficult to solve.

 

C4 – Breakspears Mews Community Garden

·        Q1.  Why are these areas of Deptford being turned into rubbish dumps? (question for Cllr Foxcroft)

·        A1. I will take that questions afterwards because I don't want to use up their three minutes.

 

C5 – tree planting – Brockley Society

·        Presentation from Clare Cowan (Chair) from the Brockley Society

·        She explained they have put the application in to fund trees outside of the conservation area.

·        Trees are very important as make the area look better, are good for the environment and enhance the local space. 

·        Important that the community is involved in tree planting to build support.

·        For these reasons the Brockley Society agreed to front the bid for trees in Tanner's Hill and around St John's.

·        Q1. Can anyone apply for a tree?

·        A1. Yes, speak to us. 

 

·        Q2. Are there any fruit trees being planted in the streets?

·        A2. The streets are quite narrow which can make it difficult. Need to know what to plant where.

 

C6 – mural – Brockley Cross Action Group

·        Rupert King from the Brockley Cross Action Group explained the group’s project

·        He exaplined they operate around Brockley Cross area and that they have been funded before but recently done planting projects. 

·        Rupert said they were asking for funding to implement a mural project under the bridge near Brockley Cross junction.

·        Currently it is an eye sore so they want to install a community developed piece of artwork on the east wall underneath the bridge.

·        There would be community collaboration with the school and local community in workshops run by artists from the area.

·        The art from these workshops will be developed into the mural. 

·        The theme for the mural will come out from workshop.

·        Rupert ended his presentation by saying the group would reduce their bid to £3000.

·        Q1. What would you cut out of the budget if you are going to reduce the money?

·        A1. We'd go for matched funding.

 

·        Q2. Will you be negotiating long-term permission with Network Rail?

·        A2. There will be a license agreement for a set period of time.

 

·        Q3. How much consultation will you do on the design? Do you know that people liked the one before? What is this based on?

·        A3. We think people liked the previous mural based on comments and the fact it has not been graffitied. We will work with people to develop themes and community support.

 

·        Q4. What about damage caused by pigeons nesting under the bridge?

·        A4. Doubtful that the mess would get onto the mural. However, will consider it and work with Network rail.

 

C7 - Youth football for activity and health – Junior Reds FC Titans

·        Presentation given by the team’s manger Ilhan Gursoy.

·        Ilhan explained that he had been working within football for a while.

·        Currently 10-11 children take part in the team and they have an inclusive approach to make new people welcome. 

·        They find it difficult to get a place to train and play matches.

·        Q1. There is lots of funding for sport available, have you tried other places?

·        A1. We can't get other funding. Only other place that we can get trained in Brockley is in Pendergast.

 

·        Q2. Whereabout do you meet/play?

·        A2. Kent (SELKENT league).

 

·        Q3. My son is 7, can he join?

·        A3. At the moment because of number of volunteers, we only have an under 10 team

 

·        Q4. How many children will benefit?

·        A4. 11.
