Traffic Calming on Bradgate Road

We the undersigned petition the council to undertake an urgent review of Bradgate Road to identify traffic calming and improvement measures, potentially as part of a healthy neighbourhood strategy.

Bradgate Road should be a quiet residential road, particularly as it has a primary school at one end, and is a key route to the nearby Ladywell fields park.

Current road use has become intolerably problematic, culminating in regular acts of aggression and violence against other road users and residents who have tried to resolve tensions, and preventing many from considering cycling or letting children to walk themselves to school.

Multiple incidents are occurring on a weekly basis, causing widespread distress and potentially endangering those involved.

A number of issues are combining to cause these issues; including:

1) Bradgate road is being used as a rat-run to avoid the A21 and South Circular junctions, leading to an unsustainable number of vehicles.

2) The Aldi car park and access is poorly laid out, especially for pedestrians, and incapable of dealing with regular peak traffic volumes.

3) The narrow width of the road in its two way form, combined with increasing car widths, prevents drivers from being capable of passing each other, leading to regular stand offs with increasing tail backs and associated tensions.

This will become increasingly problematic should the planned rerouting of the South Circular take place, and any of the other anticipated construction works, particularly noting that the Aldi site itself has been allocated for high rise development.
