Bring Santander Cycles to Lewisham

We the undersigned petition the council to introduce Santander Cycles to Lewisham in order to reduce air pollution, increase the use of bikes to promote a more sustainable future and aid the accessibility to local areas through the widespread placement of bike stands.

Air pollution in Lewisham is over 6 times higher than the WHO guidelines. Children have died from our vast amounts of particulate matter. The introduction of Santander bikes can relieve the issue by reducing toxic air pollution, in addition to increasing accessibility to central London and nearby areas by bike.

Council response

The current Santander cycle hire scheme was installed and is still managed by Transport for London (TfL). This was a significant improvement to cycle infrastructure and funded solely by TfL.

Lewisham have engaged with TfL to seek an expansion to the Santander cycle hire scheme into the borough, and there has been a meeting recently. At this time Lewisham does not have the resources for this significant piece of work and any decision between TfL and Lewisham will be dependent on many factors including available funding. The cost of living crisis and strains on local authority and TfL budgets means there will need to be a careful assessment on any future funding commitments and allocations, including Council priorities.

I am sorry we cannot give a more positive response at this time.
