We support adults with Learning Disabilities living in the London Borough of Lewisham

We are based at The Albany, in Deptford, butcover the whole Borough

We offer a range of services including peer support and 1:1 advocacy

My role comes out of the Disability Hate Crime Matters initiative launched last year:-

My work, which is funded by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), is about putting that important initiative into practice.

Current priorities for Brockley:

·         Tackling drug supply

·         Speeding – St Johns Vale

Action being taken:

·         Contact points are now held at Pinnacle Housing Office, Endwell Road, dates and times are advertised on the Brockley SNT webpage.

·         MetTrace take up continues to increase day by day with the end of March deadline approaching. We are utilising Special Constables to assist with this which has proved to be an excellent means of engaging with the local community. 

·         The team continues to support Operation Sceptre with weapons sweeps ad patrols of hotspot areas.

Good News

Officers from Brockley attended the Brockley Christmas fayre in Coulgate Street. This was an excellent opportunity to engage with the local community and build relationships with local community groups including the Brockley Society.

The vulnerable persons resettlement scheme provides local councils the funding they need to resettle vulnerable refugees and is only guaranteed until 2020.

The vulnerable persons resettlement scheme is critical to these plans and the ability of other councils to welcome refugees in the future

We have already welcomed 15 Syrian refugee families to the borough, with the first having arrived in February 2017. This has been made possible through the local community (including the Lewisham branch of Citizens UK, the local mosque and churches), who have offered their homes and helped with integration support.

Cllr Bonavia said, ‘We have learnt a lot from working with our first 15 families, but the humanitarian crisis in Syria that led to this policy is tragically far from over. In what is the biggest forced displacement of people since the Second World War, many millions of people still need a safe and secure sanctuary from war.

‘By expanding our resettlement scheme to a further 100 families, we are showing compassion to some of the most vulnerable people in the world. We need the Government to support us in this endeavour by giving us the resources we need to give these people a safe place to call home.'

                        Mental Health Facts

                        Mental ill health affects us all:

·     One in five of us has a mental health condition at any one time.

·     Around half of people with lifetime mental health problems experience the

    first symptoms before the age of 14.

·     Only a quarter of people with a mental health condition receive any

    treatment for it.

·     Nine out of ten people in prison have at least one mental health problem.

    Almost a quarter of prisoners have a mental illness that requires

            specialist treatment.

·     Mental ill health has an economic and social cost of £105bn a year.

·     Mental illness accounts for 28% of the total burden of disease but only

    13% of NHS spending.

·     Untreated mental ill health adds around £10 billion a year to the cost of

    physical health care for people with long-term conditions.

·     People with severe and enduring mental health conditions die on

    average 20 years earlier than those without.

                      Cllr Jonathan Slater is a local councillor for the London Borough of

                      Lewisham, where he represents Whitefoot Ward, elected in 2014.

                      Cllr Slater is also a policy professional with over ten years’ experience of

                      working for national, international, regional and local organisations,

                      seven years of which has been on the delivery of services to children,

                      young people, and families, both in the public and voluntary sector.

                      Cllr Slater has supported the voluntary sector in being part of

                      Lewisham's successful stage 2 application for Head Start funding, to

                      support 10-14 year olds in the borough with their emotional resilience.

                      He quotes:

            Mental Health provision isn't just about supporting those with high level

            needs but providing holistic support to the whole community in helping them

            with their emotional resilience.

·         Telegraph Hill Festival takes place between 10 and 25 March 2018.   There is lots to see, take part in, and enjoy.   West Side Story kicks off Telegraph Hill Festival with four shows across 10th and 11th March.   As the Festival goes on there will be Spoken Word, Theatre, Art, Cabaret, Comedy, Film, Open Mics, Classical Music, Disco Bingo and more for you to enjoy.   And best of all, it's all local and really easy to reach.   Printed programmes will be available from local cafes and pubs in late February.

The application forms for the stalls at the Hilly Fields Fayre will be available on 1 April 2018 on Brockley Society’s website, www.brockleysociety.org.uk. This is a great opportunity for those selling crafts, arts, preserves, bric-a-brac … and much more. It is also very successful for community, charities and campaign groups to publicise their work. The field is very big and there should be lots of room for all stalls. Application forms for the catering stalls (limited number) are already available on the website
